In the spring of 2018, we embarked on an epic adventure—an interactive, funk-filled, lettered-powered musical voyage across the heartland of America.
And while touring coast to coast, traversing our great if sometimes divided, always screen-enslaved nation, we got to thinking: what unites all humanity? A funky tune? Putting down the damn phone to shake yer groove thang? Yes, yes and… handwritten letters.
So before heading out, we invited our community to hand-write anonymous letters that we’d carry with us to each gig we played, truck stop tryst and hospitable home that took us in. Everyone we met along the way was invited to take a letter, leave a letter, as we cross-pollinated strangers throughout more than a dozen states—red and blue, landlocked and coastal, rocky mountain and deep swampy south—with a good old-fashioned analogue epistolary exchange.
No re-tweeting. No comments section. No "liking". Just pen, paper and heart. And it was the most beautiful experience of our lives. So many letters. So many new friends. So incredible to watch our shows and even just stops to fill up on gas or grab lunch at a roadside diner transform into heart-felt letter-writing sessions.
So amazing was our experience that we thought: why not keep it going? Why stop with the tour? So from here on out, keep an eye out for a traveling mailbox full of love letters. There's one in there for you.
